Understanding the difference between accuracy and precision in pipette calibration is essential for maintaining reliable laboratory performance. While both matter, they address different aspects of measurement quality — and a well-calibrated pipette must satisfy both.
Accuracy describes how close a measurement is to the true or accepted value. Using a target as an analogy: accuracy is how close your shots land to the bullseye.
Precision describes consistency — getting the same result repeatedly, whether or not that result is near the bullseye. You might miss the center every time, but precision means you're hitting the same spot each time.
In a laboratory setting, both matter independently. An inaccurate pipette produces skewed data — your measurements are systematically off from the true volume. An imprecise pipette introduces variability across replicates, making results unreproducible even if the average is correct. Calibration is where accuracy and precision converge: a properly calibrated pipette delivers measurements that are both correct and consistent.
For a deeper look at the documentation standards that govern calibration, see our guide on ISO 17025 certification requirements.
Achieving both accuracy and precision over time requires managing several common sources of drift:
Regular professional calibration addresses the first two directly — worn components are replaced, contaminants are cleared, and the instrument is verified against NIST-traceable gravimetric standards. Technique-related issues are best addressed through operator training, which our technicians are glad to discuss during an on-site visit.
Our calibration process is designed to restore and verify both accuracy and precision in a single service visit. Every pipette we service receives:
We offer on-site calibration for labs that prefer minimal disruption, and mail-in service for labs that want a comprehensive off-site overhaul. Service tiers range from standard maintenance with a calibration sticker to full ISO 17025-documented as-found/as-left data packages for GLP/GMP and pharmaceutical environments.
The practical stakes of accuracy and precision go beyond data quality. In regulated environments — CAP/CLIA-accredited clinical labs, FDA-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing, GLP research studies — calibration certificates are audit evidence. An improperly calibrated pipette doesn't just produce bad data; it creates a compliance gap that auditors will find.
Our certificates are formatted to support CAP, CLIA, GMP, GLP, and FDA audit documentation requirements. Every certificate goes through quality review before digital delivery, typically within 1–3 business days of the service visit.
